Hydra hunting for fun and profit!
(First post)
My character's a Level 20 Warrior/Monk and I've been trying to finance a suit of Knight's Armor since I got to the Dwarven Forge (I forgot the exact name, sorry). I payed material traders and the material crafter outside of Fort Ranik for the Iron and Leather squares I needed, but still had a shortage of gold. So I decided to solo Skyward Reach for Hydras.
It was the best decision I made. I simply waited until I could get a Hydra one on one (or two on two, but I died half the time....taking one of the Hydra with me.... ), and used Flurry/Sever Artery/Gash/Garath Slash/Final Thrust until the thing died. I cast Mending on myself before the fight and kept Healing Breeze in reserve, and I used the Monk skill that gives my character health back everytime he attacks. Not only do the Hydra usually drop 90-150 gp at a time, I've also gotten several purple items and a whole lot of blues from their carcases.
But my best drop was the purple max damage Firey Dragon Sword of Fortitude that dropped after I killed two Hydra at the same time without dying. I earned that sword, and the profits off of that financed the Knight's Gauntlets and Boots. I didn't keep it because I like my Flamberge of Fortitude that I got off the Facet of Strength better. (Got the elite skill Gladiator's Defense off of him too ). Now I just need the Knight's Helmet and I got the whole set.
So does this post meet with your approval?

Fighting one by itself maybe, but two on one gets difficult and it's hard to get one alone while you're trying not to aggro the whole herd.

Hydras are by no means easy when you get 2+. They have tha habit of AEing knocking all your groups HP down fast. Annoying.

I like the Hydra idea of farming. Especially in Dragon's Gullet because you can quickly get to a mass of them. Of course you do have to be careful not to get them all after you but hey depending on your job/level/skills you could take them out relatively easy. Once they're all dead run to zone and return. Rofl gonna have to try it sometime sounds like fun.

When i Solo as a warrior Monk i do this, Get the skills Endure Pain(str) and Healing Breeze
Right before you attack cast Endure pain so your health skyrockets, at the same time cast healing breeze and then run into fight, for the first ~8 seconds their attacks do nothing to you because the Breeze. As soon as Endure Pain Wares off do not cast it agian, it will waste your energy. Instead just make sure you are always enchanted by Healing Breeze and you should be able to take 2 down yourself. I have done this multiple times as a lvl 18 W/Mo Just make sure you never aggro more than 2. Hope this works for you.

I find the sand drakes to be easier then the hydras. I went all the way from Augury to Elona Reach with only a healer, killing every sand drake on the way. Whenever hydras teamed up the fight was harder then it should have been, but drakes I could take down in groups of three if I had to. Just take the healer with you when you go hunting out there.

If you are a necro I believe you need the Elite skill that consumes corpses and gives you life. The downside will be that you need to make sure you get some corpses first. However if you're high enough you should be able to kill a couple to ensure that. I'm having a brain warp atm can't think of the skill but the picture has teeth.

Soul Feast.
Consume Corpse also works, but gives you a portion of energy as well.

Tekmaster, neat idea, I'll have to try it. Question, what worked best to lure one off by itself? Just a matter of trying until you find one by itself, or can you use a bow to sucker one out of a group to chase you?

Why not cast Divine Blessing (depending on how much you've put into your protective skills) it boosts your max health near 100 with putting little into it, then do endure pain before rushing in.....hehe 7-800 monster coming thru ....and that's nowhere near level 20.
